Founder of DEC dies aged 84

The NY Times reports the death of Ken Olsen, one of the founders of DEC. DEC are famous for the PDP range of mini-computers which were popular with smaller businesses who required a lot of computing power compared to an expensive mainframe. The company alos spawned a number of leading lights in the industry.

DEC was acquired by Compaq in 1998 for $9.6 billion.

Interestingly, Bill Gates cites Olsen as “….a major influence on my life.”
